Cold Storage draws inspiration from a prairie archetype, the icehouse, by recalling the waterfront’s working history andre-imagining this historical typology today as a shelter on the river. Ice blocks harvested from the river are staged within a timber frame to form a library of frozen volumes that act as a windbreak from the harsh winter winds. Inside, a public room is formed with an insulating core of straw bale benches.
